How to avoid spam filters

Most mail servers implement spam filters to ensure spam does not get through. Spam filters read your emails, and look for similarities with known spam. Filters learn to scan for those “traits” in every email message. Firstly the filter will verify if the message comes from the correct sender and that the “from” email address exists. Secondly the filter will scan the contents of your message. Every time it finds something that looks “spammy”, it assigns a “score” to the email.  For instance, using “Click here!” might get you 0.7 points. Using bright red fonts might get you 2 points. Once an email exceeds a certain threshold, default 5.0, the email is classified as spam.

Even if you don’t intend to spam, your message might still end up in a spam folder. Spam filters aren’t designed to detect whether ‘spam’ was intended or accidental.

Here are some tips to help your message pass spam filters:

• Don’t use bright red fonts, too many colours, styles and formatting.

• Don't yell with lots of exclamation marks!!!!!!!

• Don’t just use caps: YELLING WITH ALL CAPS!!!!

• Be careful of saying, “free” or “click here!” or “click here now!” or “act now!” or “limited time!”

• Have a balance between your image and text within your design. If you only have images in the body of your email the spam filters will have nothing to read and assume your message is spam.

• Don’t send the HTML email by itself; always include a plain-text alternative message.
